O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds)

Shaykh Ahmed -may Allaah preserve him- said:

{{ يَٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلصَّدِقِينَ }}

((O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds).))

So this verse was revealed after the story of the three who remained behind (and did not go with) the Prophet (to the battle of Tabuk) – صلى الله عليه وسلم – and they told the Prophet – صلى الله عليه وسلم – the truth in making clear their reason for remaining behind, and they did not lie, and they made clear that they had no reason (for having remained behind). So the consequence of their truthfulness was safety, and the forgiveness of Allaah upon them.

Ibn Katheer – رحمه الله تعالى – said: “When Allah – تعالى – mentioned what He relieved these three from meaning: Ka’ab ibn Malik and his two companions – رضي الله عنهم أجمعين – , what He relieved them from; from constriction and burden from the Muslims abandoning them for fifty nights and days. And their own selves were straitened to them and the earth, vast as it is, was straitened: meaning , despite its vastness. So the paths and ways were closed off to them. So they were not guided by that which they did. So they were patient with the command of Allaah and they surrendered to Allaah, and they surrendered to the command of Allaah. And they were firm until Allaah relieved them because of their truthfulness with the Prophet – صلى الله عليه وسلم – with regards to (the reason for) them remaining behind. And that is was for no reason. So they were punished for this for that period of time. Then Allaah forgave them and their compensation was good and forgiveness (from Allaah) for them.

And that’s why He – تعالى – said:

{{ يَٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلصَّدِقِينَ }}

((O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds).))

Meaning always be truthful and you will be with its people. And you will be safe from the destructive things. And He will make for you a way out and an exit out of your hardships.”

➖That is the end of his speech – رحمه الله تعالى -.
